Poverty Experiences over the Life-Couse among Adult Koreans Using Life-Table Models
Woo Hae-Bong

Abstract
Using life-table models, this study examines gender and educational differences in life expectancy in poverty (less than half of the median household income) for Korean adults aged 20 or older. First, the data indicate that Koreans alive at 20 are expected to live approximately 11 years for men and 18 years for women in poverty, corresponding to 20% and 27% of the total life expectancy at 20 of men and women, respectively. However, this study finds that life expectancy in poverty is not evenly distributed across age. The data indicate that life expectancy in the poverty state is expected to rapidly increase with age. Second, while women live longer lives than men, they are more likely to live longer years in poverty. The proportion of poverty life expectancy out of the total life expectancy among women tends to increase sharply in older age. Finally, persons with a less than high school education have shorter life expectancy in the non-poor state than those with a high school education or more but they are also more likely to live longer years in the poverty state. This study also shows that gender differences in poverty life expectancy are further differentiated by educational attainment, indicating that women with lower education have a much greater risk of poverty over the life-course.
